HEXP Consortium: Redefining Modular ATEX Integration

Established in 2024, the HEXP Consortium is a collaborative framework dedicated to developing and validating ATEX-compliant modular solutions for hazardous areas. By decoupling hardware from proprietary software, the consortium provides an open-architecture model that ensures flexibility, scalability, and long-term asset reliability.

HEXP Consortium: Core Framework & Roles

The HEXP architecture is strictly modular. Hardware and software components are selected based on technical suitability for the specific application, ensuring no mandatory "vendor lock-in."

Taken together, the HEXP consortium thus forms an open and scalable ecosystem in which PSPL fulfils the initiating, accelerating, and architectural roles, industrial partners materialise and commercialise solutions, and software and platform partners provide modular building blocks on top of our certified hardware. This setup stimulates innovation and accelerates market adoption, while parties retain their independence, intellectual property, and commercial freedom.

HEXP Consortium: 2026 Strategic Roadmap

The consortium is currently scaling to support a full-service modular solution of pre-certified components. The 2026 phase focuses on high-impact field validation, including 10 industrial pilots and 5 specialised lighting renovations in partnership with major European ATEX manufacturers. These projects serve as critical references, proving innovation through rigorous, real-world deployment with tier-one operators, resulting in:

  1. European Demonstration & Experience centres that showcase all components integrated into certified, operational linear lighting fixtures, high-bays, streetlights, and floodlight solutions from a variety of lighting OEM manufacturers.
  2. Financial HEXP Whitepapers ATEX targeting OEM lighting manufacturers, allowing them to evaluate their route to connected lighting with a full, detailed long-term cost-of-ownership model. These Whitepapers also allow them to compare the manufacturing, certification, and OPEX costs of their customers' lighting solutions, both standard and Industrial IoT-connected.
  3. Technical HEXP Whitepapers targeting site contractors and operator companies to evaluate the timing, workflow, and in-the-field costs of Greenfield and Brownfield replacement/installation, commissioning, maintenance, and asset management of smart LED lighting solutions for Atex and non-Atex Industrial Harsh Environments.
  4. Environmental HEXP Whitepapers targeting operator companies and local governments, showing the environmental impact of light-pollution reduction, lifetime extension, and the impact on site safety's 'wellbeing', and a stepwise accommodation process to shift from always-on lighting to 2050 CO2-neutral lighting-on-demand.
  5. Standardisation Whitepapers in close co-operation with DALI Alliance, extending DALI-2 industrial light control to an intrinsic safe extension of DALI-EX-LV ™

HEXP European market introduction strategy

  1. Simplify the Atex lighting market by offering Atex/IECEx pre-certified modular components to OEMs.
  2. Focus on the optimal balance between technology costs and excellent performance, grounded in proven reliability and security.
  3. Improve site safety by providing a roadmap to 100% Ex i intrinsically safe lighting reference designs for EX Zones 1, 2, 21, and 22.
  4. HEXP believe in the excellence of local European partnerships & local manufacturing.
  5. HEXP-based products make EX and IQ lighting connected, secure (CRA), safer, more reliable, and longer-lasting, and reduce energy consumption by 50-95% on top of the efficacy improvement from fluo to standard LED (50-70%).
  6. HEXP's ambition is to enable the European Ex Zone market transition from fluo to smart LED.
